VirtualBox: (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X): VirtualBox is very popular because it’s open-source and completely free. There are several different virtual machine programs you can choose from: If you still need Windows XP for older apps, you could run it in a VM where at least the harm of running an old, unsupported OS is mitigated. Sandboxing also allows you to run insecure OSes more safely. RELATED: Tell Your Relatives: No, Microsoft Won't Call You About Your Computer This makes VMs a safe place to test apps-or websites-you don’t trust and see what they do.įor example, when the “Hi, we’re from Windows” scammers came calling, we ran their software in a VM to see what they would actually do-the VM prevented the scammers from accessing our computer’s real operating system and files. Software inside a VM can’t escape the VM to tamper with the rest of your system. RELATED: Sandboxes Explained: How They're Already Protecting You and How to Sandbox Any ProgramĪnother advantage VMs provide is that they are “ sandboxed” from the rest of your system. If you want to run a later version of Windows-like Windows 10-but have older apps that only run on XP, you could install Windows XP into a VM. For example, as a Linux or Mac user, you could install Windows in a VM to run Windows apps you might not otherwise have access to. VMs also provide a way to run another OS’ software. When you’re done playing with an OS, you can just delete the VM. For example, they are a great way to mess around with Linux-or a new Linux distribution-and see if it feels right for you. ![]() They allow you to experiment with another OS without having to install it on your physical hardware. Why You’d Want to Create a Virtual MachineĪside from being good geeky fun to play around with, VMs offer a number of serious uses. ![]() Watching it back that probably makes no visual difference, but in optimization its a massive improvement that means when your game needs more power, or shadowplay needs to spend more time making a frame look pretty, the power is there at the loss of one or two frames. Nvidia shadowplay (or replay as i think its now called?) uses a variable frame rate. ![]() Im no video pro so take this with a pinch of salt, but this is my understanding: I’m new to both to be honest so any help would be appreciated. I normally only record games that aren’t as demanding (emulators like I said above) but I’m wanting to start recording more gameplay of newer PC games, and since my PC can handle ultra settings at 4K I’d like to be able to capture them at 60fps if possible, so I just want to find out if I’m best using OBS or if I should use Nvidia Shadowplay instead? According to VLC it isn’t dropping any frames so I’m not sure if this is either because I’m encoding with NVIDIA NVENC which uses the GPU instead of CPU, or if there is some other setting I’m not using properly. I then watched them side by side.įor the most part they look indistinguishable, however in areas of high movement, if I’m running and turning a lot, or just about to land from my parachute for example, the video from OBS gets very choppy. I recorded some gameplay today with OBS, then once that was done I used the Nvidia GeForce Instant Replay tool to save the last 20 minutes. ![]() I use OBS and it works great for things like my emulators if I’m recording anything from SNES and Genesis, up to PS2, WiiU and Dolphin. I normally get about 120 but it dips to about 90-100 when recording via OBS on 4K ultra. I am playing on 4K ultra settings, and my frame rate is higher than what OBS records. I’ve also made sure I set my source to record game capture instead of display capture, and play the game in full screen. I find that Nvidia Shadowplay offers a much better output with a lot less lag than recording through OBS.įirstly, on OBS I have the following settings: Unfortunately, I don’t have a dedicated streaming/recording PC, so I record from the same PC I play from. I’ve been recording some Warzone clips on my PC. |
